This print is an amalgamation of some seminal works created for my Finding Black series ( 2014 -2015) in which I explored culture as a site of negotiation, specifically ‘Black’ culture and my own identity, taking the line that a person of colour shouldn’t be defined by passing “pop-litical” references, which are often stereotypical, racist and reductive. Finding Black situated itself as an interrogation of my Black identity programming, based on my consumption of popular culture and media, inclusive of American and British film, television, comics, literature, soca, dancehall, hip-hop music, and current world affairs. Finding Black has shown in Trinidad, Jamaica, and the US.
